SIDING

Since the exterior of your home is the first things people see, you will want to show the beauty of it and how much pride you have in it by using the best CertainTeed siding products. Wendell's is proud of its recognition as a CertainTeed Master Craftsman. This means that we have undergone extensive training and testing and know what is the best product to apply to your home.

With Michigan's cold climate protecting your home with a strong durable siding that will withstand the abuse of extreme conditions is important. Fifteen years of experience has given Wendell's the know-how and expertise to apply the correct product to your home. Our experienced craftsmen allow Wendell's the ability to support siding installations on multi-unit complexes, commercial and single family home projects.

Whether it's trim, vinyl siding, polymer shakes or
fiber cement siding you need, WE CAN DO IT ALL.

CertainTeed is your best source for the finest vinyl siding and polymer shakes products available. Vinyl is now the number-one siding material available. This is because nothing beats vinyl siding, accessories and trim for sheer endurance. Unlike many other siding materials, vinyl is impervious to rain, cold, salt and snow.

And Vinyl won't rot, peel, dent or show scratches, nor will it ever need painting. A simple soap and water rinse once a year is all that's required to remove dirt and maintain the look of freshly painted wood.

Vinyl siding is a great investment. Residing a home is among the top ten remodeling projects in terms of overall payback. And, if you reside with vinyl, you can often recoup 100% or more of your investment.

As North America's largest manufacturer of vinyl building products, CertainTeed Corporation's quality brands -- Ashland-Davis, Wolverine and CertainTeed brand -- are the most trusted names in the industry.

WINDOWS

Is your home drafty?
Do you want to lower your heating costs?
Is there a buildup of condensation between your window panes?

Windows and doors are one of the most important considerations when undertaking a new construction, remodeling or replacement project. No other item can affect both the outside and inside of your home. So make sure you choose the best. This is a big decision that the experts at Wendell's can help you make.

Leaky windows are the obvious reasons for replacing old wooden windows, with energy efficient ones. By not replacing your leaky windows, you can actually cause more damage because the leaks can cause rot to the structure or the finish of your home. Stopping the leaks and energy efficiency almost goes hand in hand. Older homes generally are not very energy efficient due to leaking windows and doors or insufficient insulation. Simply by replacing your windows and doors can reduce your energy bills, saving you money. Replacing your old windows and doors does not cost, it pays.

Replacement windows built by today's standards can pay for themselves by the amount of savings in heating and cooling costs of a home. They also offer a homeowner many different options such as different types of glass, colors of frames, and many different styles of windows. Installation plays a huge factor in the ultimate efficiency of your new windows. A quality installation will ensure your new windows will perform as expected, while poor installation can erase any of the benefits that caused you to replace your windows in the first place. Water is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to window installation. Wendell's is proud of its designation as a CertainTeed Master Craftsman. This means that we have undergone extensive training and testing and know how to apply the best product to your home.

A few questions to ask when replacing windows are:

Are the frames insulated?
Vinyl windows with frames made of uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) extrusions insulated with a polyurethane core are much more energy efficient than wood, multichambered hollow vinyl, aluminum, and composite windows. Also make sure you look at the R-Factor of both glass and frames. Remember, the greater the R-Factor the better the insulating value.

How are the window corners connected?
If the corners are fusion-welded together the corners will never leak, which means neither water nor air will penetrate through the frames of the windows. However, if the corners are either screwed together, mechanically fastened or chemically welded, then they can start to leak over time.

Do the windows have an energy efficient glass, which will help to reduce the transfer of heat and cold?
Most windows are available with Low-E Glass, some Low-E coatings are pyrolitic hard coats, some are sputter coated soft coats, and some even contain 2 layers of Low-E coating.

Reasons To Replace Old Windows:

• Improve energy efficiency by 10-25%.

• Lower heating and cooling costs.

• Eliminate cold air drafts.

• Eliminate moisture condensation between window panes.

• Reduce noise transmission from outside your home.

• Improve the curb appearance of your home with new windows and several styles of trim.

• Reduce sun fade on upholstered fabrics, carpet and drapes.

SNOW & ICE REMOVAL

If you live in the northern half of the United States chances are you get your fair share of snow during the winter months. If your home has a shallow roof pitch or you have poor insulation in your attic, and you do not have an Ice and Water membrane shield under your roof's shingles chances are you have also experienced ice dams. Heavy snow left on your home's roof can cause structural and water damage to your home. Call the experts at Wendell's Roofing today to help you eliminate these costly problems.

Snow that is left on your roof will typically melt during the day and refreeze up during the night. This process causes ice dams to form at the eves of your roof. Over time the melting snow, or worse yet, a heavy rain storm, can cause water to back up under the roof shingles and seep into the home's attic. Besides, causing water damage to the home it can also lead to rot and mildew forming on the plywood sheathing and roof rafters in the attic. Also, mold and mildew can be a dangerous situation for your family's health and is expensive to remove.

A clear sign your home is experiencing the affects of ice damming is if you see water dripping in around the tops of your windows that reside on the eve sides of a roof. Also, if you observe water lines forming along a length of your finished drywall ceiling (e.g. along the drywall strapping), it is a sure bet that water is working its way under the shingles due to ice dams. Water laden snow is extremely heavy and cause undue stress on your home's roof. This stress can lead to everything from minor cracks to form in your drywall ceilings and walls, to an outright roof collapse. Thus it is important to remove some of the snow from your home's roof when there is more than half a foot of snow on it.

Several feet of snow from the edge of the roof should be removed as soon as the snow gets 6 inches deep.

What is an ice dam?
An ice dam is a wall of ice that forms at the edge of the roof, usually at the gutters or soffit. The water then backs up behind the ice dam and creates a pool of water. This pool of water can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.

Ice dams are usually caused by improper ventilation in the attic. This causes warmer areas in your attic then the snow begins to melt, even when the outside temperature is well below freezing. When the accumulated snow on your roof starts melting it runs down your roof underneath the snow until it reaches a "colder" section and it begins to freeze again creating an ice dam. These colder areas are usually above the soffits or in valleys and gutters.

Cleaning the gutters on your home can help prevent ice dams from occurring as quickly but they can still occur. The gutters will be just as cold as it is outside and in some cases, full of frozen debris. So even if you don't have a soffit for the water to re-freeze in, the melted water will most likely re-freeze when flowing into the gutters.

How can I prevent ice dams?
Properly ventilating and insulating the attic is usually the best way to prevent ice dams. Installation proper vents can help by allowing outside air to filter into the attic and therefore keeping the temperature inside cooler.

How can I remove an existing ice dam?
Properly removing an ice dam can be quite dangerous if you don't know how. It is suggested that you hire an experienced contractor.

WARNING!
Performing ice dam removal is risking personal injury and damage to the roof. Always contact a professional with roofing experience to carry out this job.

IMMEDIATE ACTION: Remove snow and ice dam from the roof, this eliminates one of the ingredients necessary for the formation of another ice dam. Use a roof rake and push broom to remove snow and the ice dam, but it may damage the roofing if done by an inexperienced contractor.
